Spring in Greenland is a very intense experience – from April to May Greenland turns from Arctic winter to Arctic summer and the midnight sun turns nights into days. The snow is melting fast, days turns warmer and a hectic summer begins.
Are you looking for a Greenland tour that combines spring, impressive nature and pioneering culture this is the tour for you. If you also prefer a vacation that guarantees endless beautiful sceneries, you can be sure to get full benefit from this tour.
We start in Kangerlussuaq, the gateway to Greenland. The hinterland hides a fantastic nature where the huge ice cap with its own life, sounds and cold ice is impossible to ignore. The trip continues with to the town of Ilulissat in the Disco Bay. Ilulissat means icebergs which needs no further explanation once you see the beautiful ice fjord and the numerous icebergs floating majestically into the fjord with an almost magical light and the reflections from the sun.
Hiking possibilities are great in both areas and at this time of year there are no mosquitoes. If winter has been tough and long you might even be able to join in on a sledge tour. At this time of year sailing in the fiord and bay is possible – and we especially recommend a sailing tour the small settlements in the Disco Bay and off course a tour among the huge icebergs.
We fly with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq. Ahead lies an approximately 4 hour flight and an 8 day adventure. A guide from our local tour office World of Greenland Arctic Circle welcomes you upon arrival and assists you with the check in at Polar Lodge. Polar Lodge is a stone's throw from the airport and is a relaxed accommodation with kitchen facilities, a ‘living room’ and souvenir shop.
From the lodge there is a direct view of both aircrafts and maybe a little hare hiding in the gray-brown rocks. The crackling sound in the snow echoes in the silence and automatically makes you forget the everyday life.
At the following information meeting the guide will give you practical advice about the area and the optional excursions. It is now time to experience Kangerlussuaq in your own pace and get ideas to what tomorrow should offer.
If you bought the excursion package it is now time for the tundra and wildlife tour. Kangerlussuaq has incredibly beautiful nature and is home to the massive musk ox. We will drive through the stunning tundra landscape in our 4WD truck and the guide will fill us in on the various wildlife in this area. Maybe we'll get the chance to spot musk oxen and learn more about these incredible creatures.
The musk ox lives wildly in the area around Kangerlussuaq. Whether we can come close to musk oxen, or simply look at them from a distance, is not predictable. But the guide always brings binoculars, so there is a very good chance of seeing these amazing animals and other wildlife in the area. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to explore the stunning nature and wildlife around Kangerlussuaq.
The Disko Bay is one of Greenland's most popular tourist destinations. First and foremost because of the ice, but also because of its beauty, its many cultural attractions and the interaction between the traditional lifestyle and modern urban life. Racks with kayaks jostle for space with satellite dishes.
Ilulissat is located at the mouth of the 60 kilometre long and world famous ice fjord Kangia, which in 2004 was included on UNESCO’s world heritage list. The ice is enthralling and can be experienced out on the sea, on land and from the air. You can see the huge icebergs from the hotel and from almost any spot in town.
The hometown of the explorer Knud Rasmussen offers many exciting experiences no matter if you want to do hiking trips in the hills or merely enjoy the cosy atmosphere in the town on your own or on guided excursions.
